The piece Living ryijy-rug is a part of an ongoing project called Canvas project which began in 2014. The Canvas project is Niiranen-Hisatomi’s attempt to make a single, complete canvas by hand, starting with the planting of seeds. This project is divided into two main parts: 1. to weave linen cloth with home grown flax, and 2. to make a canvas stretcher-frame from home grown trees. The flax seed-pods, which make up the pile for Living ryijy rug, were grown by Niiranen-Hisatomi in a garden patch in Ensilä, Kajaani during the years 2014 –2016. After this exhibition, Living ryijy-rug will be returned to the soil and its appearance will change over time. But in the long term it will eventually come to reside in a canvas.

Who is the creator of a painting?
The one who has painted on a canvas.
The one who has woven a canvas.
The one who has spun thread.
The one who has harvested plants.
The one who has sown seeds.

—These thoughts occurred to me when I stood in front of a blank canvas. So now, I decided to cultivate a painting.
