Camera obscura interactive performance at Kajaani City Theatre 2023
I was asked by Kainuun lasten- ja nuorten kulttuurikeskus ry Kulttura and Kajaani City Theatre if I could create some kind of multicultural workshop for children at Kajaani City Theatre together with their two actors and freelancer costume designer Valentyna Pushkina from Ukraine. Their request was so vague that it was difficult to understand what they wanted me to do.
At least I knew what I didn’t want to do: a workshop where the children were required to make something. I felt that children already have enough tasks in their lives, especially in school. So instead, I wanted them to collect knowledge and experience art through our project.
Humans have a deep, enduring desire to see the three-dimensional world on a two-dimensional surface. This desire is ever-present, as seen in today’s smartphone-addicted society. Therefore, I decided to explore this idea with the children through the ancient method of camera obscura, allowing us to observe pictures/images—the two-dimensional world—through a simple hole.
Additionally, I wanted to create a theatre show, not just a workshop, because theatre is one of the few places where we can experience performance art. I simply love watching actors perform on stage.
I told the actor Inkeri Raittila something like that, and then she said, "I could write a script for our show". So this is how our interactive performance show came into being.
